South from Dominical

South of Dominical, as far as the village of Uvita, numerous beaches flank the shore, some with houses or tiny farms, places which will someday become villages. One of the prettiest on this part of the coast is called Punta Dominical. A high point juts out into the ocean with cliffs and surf reminiscent of California's Big Sur or Spain's Costa Brava. Below a small hotel, cliffs and rocks catch the full force of the ocean's strength as waves crash and send cascades of white foam flying high in the air. This is worth a visit if only to dine on panfried red snapper as you gaze out on the scene. The hotel only has six cabins, and the owners can't obtain permission to construct any more. The cabins are rustic, with fabulous views, but are worth the effort to book them far in advance.
All along this coast, as far south as Uvita (18 kilometers south of Dominical) the land seems to be owned exclusively by North Americans, and many don't appear to be particularly anxious to sell, and when they do, not at bargain prices. Occasionally a beachfront property can be found, but at highly inflated prices. Affordable property is found away from the beach where Ticos have land for sale. I looked at one parcel in Uvita, about a kilometer from the beach, five hectares of land (12 acres) with a comfortable house for half of what it would cost near Dominical. There were many fruit trees and enough pasture for keeping a horse or two. (By the way, horses are a very practical form of transportation)
Uvita is not as nice as Dominical by any means, but the folks living here are very friendly. They see very few tourists; most of the North Americans they encounter are residents who are happy to fit in as neighbors. From here south, the road continue until it connects with Palmar Norte , on the Pan American Highway.
