On the Pacific side, three companies operate car/passenger ferries across the Gulf of Nicoya from the mainland to the Nicoya Peninsula. Each makes several round trips per day. The ferry between Puntarenas and Playa Naranjo takes about an hour; service between Puntarenas and Paquera takes about 90 minutes. There's no advance purchase of tickets, so if you are driving, get to Puntarenas at least 30 minutes early to get your ticket and get in line; even earlier on weekends.
A passenger launch also makes three trips a day from Puntarenas to Paquera.
'Me ferry across the Tempisque River at the upper end of the Gulf of Nicoya offers an alternate route to the central and northern regions of the Nicoya Peninsula and popular beach destinations, rather than going through Liberia. The continuous turnaround trips connect Puerto Nispero and Puerto Moreno. The crossing takes about 30 minutes.
A passenger launch also operates between Golfito and Puerto Jimenez, crossing the Golfo Dulce for a sea link between the mainland and the Osa Peninsula. It runs the 90-minute voyage once a day, each way.
