Mal Pais
and Santa Teresa are located near the tip of the
Nicoya Peninsula, adjacent to Cabo Blanco National Park. These
are two of the most pristine beaches in Costa Rica and are
favorite beaches for surfers, beach bums and the cupotico
employees. Climate in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa is generally
favorable for tourism year around with two rainy months during
September and October; during the rest of the year rain tends
to fall during afternoon with sunny mornings and clear skies
during the nights.

The two corresponding tiny villages
Mal Pais and Santa Teresa consist of few hotels and cabins,
couple of mini markets, a few good restaurants; Buenos Aires
for Argentinean food and gorgeous sunsets, Tomate for Pizza,

Surfing in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa
and other Tours and Activities |

Mal Pais and Santa Teresa are mainly
famous for their consistent and very good surf conditions all
year around. During May through October the region gets the
bigger swells.
A few of the famous beaches are Playa Carmen (The first beach
driving straight upon arriving to Mal Pais) and Santa Teresa
in front of “Brunelas” and La Lora – these
are two of the best beaches for all levels, offering easy slow
and fun waves. For more advanced surfers you can go to Playa
De Los Suecos located 4 Km south (left) of the crossroads. Park
your car near the fishing boats and walk south 100 yards along
the rocks.
Puddle through the channel next to the hotel, it is a very fast
lefthander wave for advanced surfers with. Also available are
the Reef Wave in Manzanillo (Needs a lot of swell to work well)
and the Punta Barrigona: Between Los Suecos and the crossroads
– just by Mar Azul restaurant – long lefthander.

How to get to Mal Pais
and Santa Teresa from San Jose: |

By Car – Between 5 -6 hours From San Jose drive to Puntarenas (About 2 hours
drive). In Puntarenas take the ferry to Paquera (1.5 hours
on the ferry). The cost for the ferry per car is about $10
and $2 per person. From Paquera take the road towards playa
Tambor, from Tambor follow the signs to Cobano and from Cobano
to Santa Teresa and Mal Pais (It is about 1 hour from Paquera
to Cobano and another 30 minutes from Cobano to Mal Pais).

Up to Cobano the road is paved and
the last 7 Kilometers (4.3 miles) are gravel road. Welcome to

By Bus- Between 7 –
8 hours.
Take the Bus that goes to Puntarenas from San Jose, bus station
is located 350 meter north to the Health Ministery building.
No Reservation Necessary. Tel in San Jose is (506) 222-0064
and in Puntarenas is (506) 551-2158. Direct busses depart
from 6am to 7pm each hour and price is about $5. Indirect
busses depart from 4am to 9am each 2 hours and cost is $3
and it is 4 hours drive.
On arriving to Puntarenas take a taxi to the ferry ($1.5)
and buy a ticket to the ferry ($1.5). The ferry goes out of
Puntarenas to Paquera every 2 hours, starting at 6:30am. The
ferry ride is 1.5 hours long. From Paquera take the bus to
Cobano and from Cobano either take the bus or take a taxi
(About 30 minutes ride).
By Airplane – 2 -3 hours (flight takes
45 minutes).
You can take a domestic flight from San Jose to Tambor and
then take a taxi from Tambor to Mal Pais and Santa Teresa.
Flight to Tambor takes about 45 minutes and taxi takes about
45 minutes more.
