TortugueroExcept for fishermen, most people who stop at Tortuguero come to watch wildlife including sea turtle nesting and hatching. Here, adjacent to the national park, the line between nature lodges and village rooms is blurred. Green turtles lay eggs on the beach in July through September with hatching two months later, running into November. Leatherback turtles may nest any time, though March and April are peak months. recomended hotels are Mawamba Lodge and thew Pachira Lodge. Note that Tortuga Lodge, Jungle Lodge, and Ilan Ilan are across the river from the village-quieter on weekends but require boat to get to beach, park headquarters and trails, and to airstrip. |
