Tilaran is a pleasant town 2 miles (3 km) south of Lake Arenal laid out around the traditional square, with a bank, gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and small hotels and cabins.

From Tilaran take the back road to Monteverde through Quebrada Grande (unpaved) or continue on the main paved road to Canas From there you can go to Palo Verde National Park, go north on the Inter-American Highway to Guanacaste or south to the Tempisque Ferry that crosses over to the Nicoya Peninsula, or continue to Puntarenas. Buses run from Tilaran to San Jose, Canas and Monteverde.
