NORTH CENTRAL COSTA RICA
Mountains, plains, volcanoes, lakes, rivers, forests, and cattle ranches form a colorftul and diverse mosaic in this
region. Some of the major natural history attractions include Arenal
Volcano National Park & Lake Arenal,
Cano Negro National Wildlife Refuge,
Braulio Carrillo National Park, and well-known private nature
reserves such as Rara Avis and La Selva. Visitors bathe in thermal waters, windsurf, fish, bird-watch, raft, hike, and take river
wildlife tours.
Several highway routes facilitate moving within the north central region and simplify combining destinations here with
Caribbean or Northwest region attractions. Direct buses go from San Jose to
Ciudad Quesada, Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, Braulio Carrillo National Park, and Tilaran, with
connections to other destinations, such as Arenal and Boca Tapada. So far there are no scheduled airline flights to the region,
but SANSA has plans for service to
La Fortuna-check it out.
