Guanacaste Pacific Coast

A number of important Beach locations on the North Coast attract Costa Ricans and foreigners alike vacation, retirement, or business opportunities. These beaches are easily reached from San Jose in three to five hours by car. The main highway is paved and in generally good condition but can be agonizingly slow when you are stacked up behind a string of slow trucks on their way to or from the Pacific docks. Slow as this stretch may be about 10 miles or so you will be glad you have to go slow, because there are some shoulder drop-offs that could be dangerous if you drive carelessly. The secret to driving this section of the highway is not to be in a hurry. Relax and go with the flow. Enjoy the spectacular and ever-changing scenery of the Pan-American Highway.
Rainfall is lower here than anywhere else in the country. Unlike most of Costa Rica, here the dry season is truly dry, with almost no rain falling from January to May. Grass turns parched and yellow; some trees lose their leaves, often replacing them with a gorgeous display of colorful blossoms. Around homes or along inhabited beaches, however, you will see more evergreen, leafy trees because they have been deliberately planted and cared for.
