Cabo Blanco

South of the Nosara area is a long string of beaches with tremendous potential. It runs from the middle of the peninsula to Cabo Blanco at the very tip of the peninsula and then around the blunt end. A friend claims that, "Puerto Carrillo has the best and safest beach between Los Angeles and Tierra del Fuego." Most investors agree that the developmental potential between Cabo Velas and Cabo Blanco is among the best in the country.

The road paralleling the coast dwindles to a trail from time to time and you have to ford several good-size streams. An easier way is to take a ferry from Puntarenas to Playa Naranjo or Paquera which shortens the drive considerably.
Conditions are changing. For better or worse, progress is coming to the Cabo Blanco area in the form of a huge construction project at Playa Tambor. A Spanish corporation (Barcelo) has constructed a 1,500-room hotel ( Barcelo Tambor). To encourage the development, the Costa Rican government agreed to install a new ferry terminal to bring tourists from Puntarenas, to pave the road to the hotel and to provide housing for construction workers who are building the project and who later will be employed by the resort.
I say for better or worse, because construction crews immediately began filling in the mangrove wildlife preserves and leveling a mountaintop. Ecologists, claim the builders are destroying the natural wonderland that they came to exploit.
Regardless of whether the Cabo Blanco project is successful, the rest of the area is ready for less ambitious development. Costa Rica doesn't have more enthusiastic or optimistic supporters than those property owners on this part of the Nicoya Peninsula.
