For an idea of what you might have to pay to rent a house or n apartment, check the Tico Times classifieds for a wide range of Rents. Houses and apartments are offered at rents ranging from $500 to $5,000 a month (and even higher). While the $5,000 place should be spacious and luxurious, chances are the $500-a-month lace could be perfectly livable, and just as nice as similar places back home that rent for twice that amount.
But for many Costa Rican families, the idea of paying even 500 a month is prohibitive. So, if you are looking for the rock bottom in rents, check the classifieds in the Spanish-language newspaper, La Nación. The ads in that paper are read by local people who do not have the ability to pay higher rents.
