While these are the official days, during Christmas holiday week between Christmas and New Year's, and during Easter Holy week, from Wednesday noon through Sunday, most of the country is shut down. Not only are banks and offices closed, but buses don't run on some days, meaning that you need to plan ahead where you will be, with reservations, and how you will get around. Rental cars are booked months in advance for Christmas and Easter weeks. If you want to see San Jose on foot, try Good Friday, when the only moving traffic is religious processions. Costa Ricans who can take vacation then do so, and the more accessible beaches are jammed. Columbus Day is the time of annual festival in Limon, and the August 2 holiday of the Virgin of Los Angeles is Cartago's biggest festival. Thousands of celebrants march from San Jose (and from all over Costa Rica) to Cartago!
