Costa Rica Fruits
The abundance of fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables in Costa Rica is amazing. You can get an idea of it by elbowing your way through the Mercado Borbon , a two level circus of fruit and vegetable vendors in a rough-and-tumble part of town. Or you can go to any of the Saturday morning ferias del agricultor , where streets are shut off and truck farmers bring their fresh produce to the neighborhoods. In San Jose the Saturday morning market is west of Plaza Viquez . There you will find fresh homemade whole wheat bread and pastries, eggs, chickens, fish, cheese, and honey, as well as every imaginable fruit and vegetable. Bring your own shopping bags.
Unfortunately, pesticide use is still unregulated in Costa Rica , and most farmers are not aware of organic gardening. However, a small group of farmers from the Cartago area is experimenting with organic methods. You can buy their beautiful, fresh organic produce at Club Vida Natural, 100 in south of Restaurant La Nueva China in San Pedro.
Here are some tips on how to identify and choose the best produce:
