How to Make Friends
Every time I go to Costa Rica, I m
surprised again by how many clubs there are for North Americans living in Costa Rica. If you flip through the pages of the
Tico Times or Costa Rica Today, you will see column after column of clubs such as the Investment
Club, the Bridge Club, the Personal Computer Club, the Womens Club, the English-speaking Kiwanis Club, the Association of
People Who have I lad Brain Surgery, the Rotary Club, and Alcoholics Anonymous. And this doesnt even begin to scratch the
surface. In other words, you will have no trouble meeting at least some of the 30,000 North Americans currently living in
Costa Rica.
Probably the best way to meet people is to attend one of the weekly Newcomers Seminars. These seminars are held each
Tuesday morning at the Hotel
Irazu, except for time last Tuesday of only month, when they are held at the Hotel Cariari. These seminars not
only provide a meeting place, but are a great way to keep up with the latest on issues such as tax laws, health insurance,
pensionado benefits, and the like. For more information, call Terry Ennis at 220-4988. You can find
advertisements for these seminars in both the Tico Times and Costa Rica Today.
You can also meet people at church. Several churches hold services in English and are a gathering place for North
Americans who make their home in Costa Rica or are just passing through on vacation. Some of the churches with English
services include the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, the Escazu Christian Fellowship, the International
Baptist Church, the Union Church, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Costa Rica has also become known as a place for singles to meet each other. Several singles clubs advertise excursions and
parties in the English - Language publications. Hotels are constantly
sponsoring singles dances. Personal ads pepper the pages of local newspapers. Should you decide to start dating a Costa
Rican, there are a few things to remember. Costa Rican men tend to be more flirtatious and aggressive than North American
men. Costa Rican women tend to be more flirtatious and accessible than North American women. You should give any
relationship a lot of time because many Costa Ricans, unfortunately, are on the lookout for North Americans with money. back to previous page
