    > ATTRACTIONS AROUND THE VACATION RENTAL

Surfing and Boogie Boarding: Tamarindo is the surfing capital of Costa Rica as it is centrally located and surrounded by excellent surf beaches. Tamarindo Bay has both left and right breaks and is where the majority of the surf schools are located. Playa Grande, just a quick dash across the river is known for its easy to access and most consistent hollow breaks. Playa Langosta has a challenging point and river mouth break for intermediate to advanced surfers. Boogie boarding is also very common and is a good choice for those not yet ready to brave standing on a board on top of a moving wave! Hot spots such as Witch?s Rock at Playa Naranjo, Playa Avellanas and Negra are also easy to access from Tamariondo for a full day of surf. Some of these spots require four-wheel drive or boat for access. Tamarindo is full of surf camps and schools which offer inexpensive rental gear, ding repair and classes.

Sportfishing: A number of companies in Tamarindo charter boats for the day or week and can be booked in advance via the internet or upon arrival. Year round, Tamarindo Bay is an angler?s paradise. The continental shelf is where you can find the big fish, Sailfish, blue, black and stripped Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin tuna and Mahi Mahi. Closer on shore, you will find Roosterfish, Grouper, Snapper, Spotted Mackerel and Amberjack. The Catalinas and Murcielogos Islands offer Wahooo, Roosters, Cubera and Amberjack.

Golf: Tamarindo is fortunate to be located close to two great golf resorts, Hacienda Pinilla, championship golf course Casa de Golf has an 18 hole, par-72 course with wide fairways and the Paradisus Conchal Beach and Golf Resort offers a challenging par-72 course. And for those who really want a fantastic golfing experience there is the Arnold Palmer designed golf course at the Four Seasons Resort, about an hour and a half drive North.

Snorkelling and Scub Diving: Tour the world down under at the Isla de Catalinas (Catalinas and Bat Islands) and Murcielago in the North Pacific Ocean. The visibility in this area is excellent, ranging from 20 to 60 feet. Prepare for strong currents as these locations are 3 to 8 miles out at sea. Some of the underwater creatures you will most likely meet are tropical reef sharks, barracudas, eagle mantas, and giant sea turtles, which live here year round. March to November are prime months for diving at the Bat Islands and December to May is great for spotting the incredible Manta Rays. The Pacific Ocean water is normally a very comfortable 70 to 80 degrees. Snorkelling, half and full day tours are available from the many dive shops located in the town of Tamarindo.

Sailing: Glide through the Pacific ocean while enjoying the sunset with the wind in your hair and a cool drink in your hand on a catamaran or classic schooner sunset sailing cruise. Spot dolphins and jumping Manta rays, and an occasional whale while sailing the Pacific blue ocean and snorkeling in hidden coves. Some of the most colorful sunsets in the world are witnessed while sailing in Costa Rica, so don?t forget your camera!

Turtle Watching: Visit Las Baulas National Marine Park at Playa Grande, next to Tamarindo, and their trained guides will assist you to safely spot the giant leatherback turtles nesting during the months of October to March. The park was created to provide a protected area for the nesting turtles. Playa Grande is one in only 4 places in the word where once a year, the females crawl upon to the beach to lay their eggs. Just seeing first hand one of these large turtles and learing about their daily struggle to stay alive in today?s world will show you fist hand why conservation in Costa Rica is so important.

Some other exciting day tours are: Horseback riding, Canopy tours, ATV mountain

and beach tours and Mountain biking.

Additional Day Trips Available from Tamarindo

Arenal Volcano: Located North of the Tilar?n Mountains, Arenal is a beautiful, cone-shaped, active volcano. It produces frequent, loud booms that can be heard as far away as Monteverde. During the day you are often treated to clouds of ash and smoke billowing into the sky from Arenal's crater. On clear nights, spectators are occasionally treated to an eruption of lava and burning rocks. Its last major eruption was in August 2000.

Lake Arenal: This deep blue lake is a large reservoir at the foot of the active Arenal Volcano. You can enjoy boating, fishing and the best windsurfing conditions (western side) in the country. The eastern side of Lake Arenal has great freshwater fishing.

Monteverde National Park: This is the ultimate destination for anyone looking to walk in the clouds. Monteverde?s cloud forests are protected in nearly 30,000 hectares of private reserves, including Santa Elena and the Children?s Eternal Rainforest. Excellent trail systems allow you to discover the many facets of this complex life zone. This forest is famous for its populations of the legendary bird Quetzal. Enjoy other environmentally sensitive tourism activities including a Butterfly Garden, a Sky Walk and Sky Trek, a Serpentarium and more in Monteverde.

Corobici River Floating: This river rushes swiftly past tree-lined banks, open pastures, gradually slowing as it reaches the mangrove forests nearer the coast. This is a tour for nature lovers! This is a wonderful opportunity to observe wildlife along the shore ? particularly monkeys, iguanas and colorful birds. Some paddling is necessary. Other parts of the Corobici have rapids for rafters and kayakers.

Palo Verde National Park: The park encompasses one of the most important wetlands of Central America. Throughout the year, the rivers, mangroves, marshlands and seasonally flooded fields provide sanctuary for thousands of resident and migrant water birds. Sharing their world of land and water are animals such as White-tailed deer, coyote, white-nosed coatimundi, howler and white-faced monkey, iguanas and crocodiles. Take a covered pontoon boat tour on the Bebedero river, which borders the National Park, or go hiking with a skilled guide.

Rincon de La Vieja National Park: This is a 14,000-hectare magnificent dry forest. There are several different levels of hiking trails. See waterfalls, boiling mud pools and hot springs. Rincon de la Vieja has nine craters, some of which are accessible to those adventurous spirits who are prepared to do the daylong horseback ride and hike to the peak. There is also a thrilling 21-platform canyoning and rappelling tour in the park.

Guatil Pottery: Participate in workshops with local artisans and learn how to produce and paint beautiful ?Chorotega? style ceramic pottery using local clays, natural dyes and domed, wood burning ovens. Get a glimpse of how life is lived in an authentic setting.
