Volcano Arenal is considered to be the most reliable performer in comparison to the other volcanoes in Costa Rica. The perfect volcanic cone, located about three hours northwest from San Jose, awoke at the end of July in 1968 in a hail of lava and ash, and has not stopped since.
On most nights the iridescent gas clings to the summit, and lava in red, orange and yellow spews and slithers along the slopes. While in the vicinity, take a soak in waters from one of the hot springs that bubble up from the same underground world that begat the volcano.
About a five minute drive from Aurora Inn Bed and Breakfast is fjord-like man-made Lake Arenal, the perfect Arenal volcano at its south end. Most of the land surrounding the lake is Arenal National Park. The lake is great for sport fishing, and a constant breeze makes it a world class windsurfing destination. Under Arenals surface are the remains of twelve pre- Colombian settlements which were discovered with the help of American satellite photographs.
