Rafting :
White water rafting, from an ecotourism point of view, offers low-impact on the environment, access to the most remote and pristine rainforest, chance to see birds, animals and flora from a very unique point of view.
It's recommended, if you consider going to Costa Rica on your own, to hire a guide for at least your first trip on our rivers. It is simpler safer, cheaper, and far easier to take a rafting or kayaking tour with a licensed Costa Rican outfitter. They have the top-of-the-line boats, kayak and equipment and, more importantly, the experience and expertise to provide a great river trip. For a reasonable price they will provide equipment, guides, shuttles, and superb food.
Sky Trek- fly over the Jungle! :
Sky Trek is a system of trails, suspension bridges, and zip lines that offers visitors the opportunity to observe, and appreciate tropical vegetation from different vantage points, above the canopy.
Sky Trek is similar, in a way, to other canopy tour in Costa Rica, but incorporates some significant differences, such as being of larger scale, with more zip lines and platforms, longer trails, and suspension bridges. Further, the construction is of the highest quality, utilizing protective and secure materials, including metal platforms with mesh-covered steel rails which prevent falling or sliding.
Hiking:
A free hiking option in Monteverde is the dirt road up to Cerro Amigos (1840 meters), the highest peak in the area. This hill has very good views of the surrounding cloud forest and, on clear day, of Volcano Arenal 20 km away to the northeast. The steep road leaves from the gas station and ascends 300 meters in 2.5 km. On the top is a little plateau with TV antennae and views to Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean. Start early for better weather. Roughly 3 hours round trip.
CASEM:
In 1982, eight women from the Monteverde community organized and began CASEM which stands for Comite de Artesanas de Santa Elena y Monteverde.
Since 1982 CASEM has grown from 8 women to 140 artisans, 10 of them men. Many of the artisans live in the communities surrounding Monteverde.
Arenal Vulcano:
Costa Rica has so much to offer and no exploring of this amazing diversity would be complete without a visit to the Arenal Volcano. It?s active since 1968 and you can see flowing lava and flying rocks every day! Perfect classic cone shape and world class hot springs makes it a must. So if you?re planning your trip, consider combining beach, the Monteverde cloud forest and the volcano!
Horseback, bout and 4x4, it?s the most exciting way to go!
We use the old mountain trails: ? hour by 4x4 to the Mirador Lodge (look-out) then 4 hours by horseback to El Castillo or Chiquito in rainy season (4,500 foot drop-off, fantastic views of volcano, rivers and forest, includes half hour for lunch), then 1/2 hour by boat on the Lake Arenal to the dam, and finally 1/2 hour by mini bus to La Fortuna. Total time 5 hours, one way. We do this trip from La Fortuna (Arenal Volcano) to Monteverde also.
